In a neck-and-neck battle with Bristol Rovers, Barnet returned to the Football League just two seasons after leaving Underhill and being relegated the same year. A 2-0 win over Gateshead confined Rovers to the Playoffs after a pulsating back-and-forth tussle as the season drew to a close. Martin Allen was the man to win Barnet the National League for the third time.

Barnet blew away the Conference under Paul Fairclough ending with a 12-point gap over Carlisle United in 2nd. Having led the table from the August Bank Holiday, The Bees’ attacking brand of football was too much for the league to handle and we won it in style with three games to spare at home to Halifax Town.

Ever the bridesmaids, Barnet finally made it to the Football League for the first time after three 2nd place finishes in the previous four seasons. Barry Fry’s men needed a point at Fisher but a 4-2 win featuring a remarkable strike from Gary Bull was enough to do the job and confine Altrincham and Colchester to the runner-up spots.
