I have a hazy memory as a 13 year old in July 2002 (funnily enough, almost to the very day) of going to Hendon Town Hall in my Barnet shirt to show support for a new ground. I forget the finer details of what that meeting was and it’d be no use to go over old ground now anyway. It didn’t go terribly well as I recall. I didn’t really know what I was doing there but I was clear that I was showing support for my football club.
Twenty three years on, I find myself spending my Sunday evening going through my box of old Barnet shirts in the loft, gearing up for another visit to the same destination.
You’ll have hopefully received the excellent comms from Iain B over the past few weeks with clear updates on what’s happening and where we assume we are. We know it’s not the ideal scenario that the recommendation in the report is to reject - but this isn’t something we can’t overcome.
The concerted, shared effort to lobby councillors via the last eleven days (don’t forget your last one in the morning) has had an impact. We are making noise and it’s consistent.
It’s incredibly important as many of us as possible are at the town hall tomorrow night. Your show of support is huge. This is an opportunity to show how much strength of feeling there is about this issue for so many. If you’re debating whether you can make the effort on a hot Monday evening - you can. You need to if you want this to happen.
It goes without saying that the Save Barnet Playing Fields supporters will also be in attendance. Many of them are passionate and good-faith residents with whom we share a disagreement. However, there’s a chance that a handful may be there looking to antagonise where they can. They may also get an outcome (from tomorrow) that they want.
Whatever you do, don’t play into the hands of those against us by reacting. They would love nothing more than to paint the image of ‘football thugs’ about us all. Where Bring Barnet Back has felt totally different to the ‘battles’ of twenty odd years ago is exactly that - this is not a battle. We are not fighting against anyone, the only fight is for the new ground and the future of our club.
Keep this in mind tomorrow and focus on making it the ‘carnival atmosphere’ requested by the club. Get your colours on, let’s rattle through every Barnet song going and do it all showing the very best of what we are. Leave any pyrotechnics at home. Don’t turn up with beers. Mind your language.
There’s no intention to patronise anyone in saying this. We all care about the what we’re there for. We’ve just got a responsibility to show this in the right way.
Whether it’s tomorrow night or another day in the future, I’m looking forward to the celebrations like that night in The Railway Tavern a few months ago when we know we’ve brought Barnet back.
Be there. Be loud. Be proud.
