More On Notts County

It seemed impossible, but we did it. We stemmed the flow of away defeats and not for the first time this season, managed to avoid defeat at Accrington. Brilliant. We weathered the storm and journeyed home with our pride intact.

Oh of course I'm being a silly billy, but I must look at the lighter side of football at the moment. Everything looks decidedly grim, everyone's depressed, so I'm gonna try and enjoy it. There's no use getting het up about it, it drives you mad. One way of doing this was spending three nights in Nottingham to coincide with the game at Notts County. Yes, there was a football match and I lasted about 30 minutes of this statistical inevitability.

Call me fickle if you like, but I can't sit and watch that all the time with my life. I've got better things to do. But I'll still go to these games and spend the money. Why? The twisted logic of your fanatical football supporter comes to the fore again. The weekend away was the massive attraction behind this trip of which more will eventually follow.

I liked the idea behind the system at Meadow Lane however the application and more importantly the players involved were the downfall. Plus of course the fact that Notts County are a much better team. Using five midfielders, with two driving on to support the lone frontman and three holding in the middle sounds good on paper. However when this appears to be being bypassed by some hopeless balls from defence you haven't got much chance. As much as it pains me to say it, Paul Furlong is clearly not what he was this year. He was superb on loan, but it appears the years have caught up with him and that is a massive shame.

I don't understand what Ahmed Deen did so badly to be a player who warms the bench at best. He fit in very dependably at right back when required and looked the better of the two left backs before Matt Lockwood arrived back at the club. Kenny Gillet's inclusion at right back ahead of Deen is a mystery to me. I do not rate Gillet in the slightest, especially when delivering poor passes on the wrong side of the field.

Karl Hawley broke the deadlock five minutes in. Well this looked ominous didn't it. Pre-match predictions had County running up cricket scores and suggestions that we should play the game at nearby Trent Bridge. Far too easy for him to finish as he was unmarked at the back post. It should have been two soon after. We were caught far too easily on our right hand side and Lee Hughes somehow conspired to balloon the ball into County's Kop.

What is it about that pesky Ben Davies and free kicks? He put one in against us for Shrewsbury last season and probably has done before (research being my strong point this evening) and when he lined up to take another one from 20 yards, you just knew. Gowon Ben, rub our faces in it. You haven't scored for a while. Oooh now there's a thing! It's gone through the wall look! It's 2-0! Bloody hell, BORING!

Neal Bishop did his best to antagonise the indifferent Barnet following totalling a half decent 270 as Davies celebrated his goal. Hardly a surprise and it's got to be expected considering the bile spouted in his direction this season. Highly unnecessary however, but maybe that's just down to the kinda guy we're dealing with here.

I was severely tempted to walk out at this point. I don't know what stopped me. About five minutes later though, I was going. Maybe the five minutes were spent thinking about leaving. It was another clear County opening that prompted it. I didn't need to see my team being pummelled repeatedly so I took the walk back to Hooters with a few others. Y'know, the fine establishment where young ladies parade around in very little clothing? A party of twenty girls from Coventry were there as well. I made the correct decision.

Soccer Saturday's on too. I can watch all of the goals go in and drink cider. Why don't I do THIS more often instead? The predicted influx of County goals were not forthcoming which was a slight comfort. Apparently we played alright in the second half, though I'll believe that when I see it. Which I won't. Fortunately the having fun in abundance part carried on long into the early hours.

I'll end this once again by saying the same thing as usual. We need to win. Things need to change. Very quickly. Repeat ad nauseam.
